As of November 2020
To find the billionaires (and their spouses) who are donating to the campaigns of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, we started with data from the Federal Election Commission. Since there are millions of entries, we limited our search to only itemized donations of at least $100. We reviewed addresses and employment information to confirm the identities of donors to the Biden and Trump campaigns, as well as their joint-fundraising committees, which raise money in conjunction with the campaigns. Then we went wider, searching for donations those same people made to other political parties, Congressional candidates, super-PACs and so on.
This tool shows what we found. Red circles indicate a donation to the Trump campaign or its joint fundraising committees. Blue circles indicate a contribution for Biden. The size of the circle indicates roughly how much money the donor, or donor couple, has pumped into the federal political system during the 2019-2020 election cycle, including their Trump and Biden contributions. Itemized donations of at least $100 are counted to reach the total figure; refunds have been subtracted. Since Donald Trump filed his reelection papers on January 20, 2017, we started counting donations to his campaign and joint-fundraising committees on that day. It’s possible we missed a donor, or donations. We will continue to update the data through the election.
